Clarification questions to improve dialogue flow and speech recognition in spoken dialogue systems

چکیده
Within human-machine conversation, clarification is vital and may consist of various forms, as it is may by due to many different effects on different levels of communication. In this paper, we present a strategy for detecting situations where a need for clarification exists in a natural spoken dialogue system. We define rule sets which enable us, via an anomaly analysis, to detect these critical situations. Through the use of such rule sets, we show that ist is possible to enhance the strategy in such a manner that more different situations are detected. In a user test, we evaluate the success of the strategy and show that strategies with explicit clarification improve the naturalness of human-machine interaction.

Robust language analysis and generation for spoken dialogue systems
Spoken dialogue systems have to deal with imperfect speech recognition. We describe howwe address the resulting robustness challenges both on the interpretation side (via combining complementary parsing and classification techniques) and on the generation side (via robustness to ill-formed generation input, and use of clarification questions). We describe empirical results obtained from a user ...
متن کاملClarification in Spoken Dialogue Systems
This paper argues for the use of more natural and flexible clarification questions in spoken dialogue systems. Several forms and aspects of clarification questions are discussed and exemplified by examples from human-human dialogue corpora. We show how clarification questions fit into the broader context of miscommunication and describe the types of information spoken dialogue systems need in o...
متن کاملModelling Human Clarification Strategies
We model human responses to speech recognition errors from a corpus of human clarification strategies. We employ learning techniques to study 1) the decision to either stop and ask a clarification question or to continue the dialogue without clarification, and 2) the decision to ask a targeted clarification question or a more generic question. Targeted clarification questions focus specifically...
متن کاملAutomatically predicting dialogue structure using prosodic features
Spoken dialogue systems need to track dialogue structure in order to conduct sensible conversations. In previous work, we used only a shallow analysis of past dialogue in predicting the current dialogue act. Here we show that a hierarchical analysis of dialogue structure can significantly improve dialogue act recognition. Our approach is to integrate dialogue act recognition with speech recogni...
متن کاملProbabilistic Dialogue Modeling for Speech-Enabled Assistive Technology
People with motor disabilities often face substantial challenges using interfaces designed for manual interaction. Although such obstacles might be partially alleviated by automatic speech recognition, these individuals may also have cooccurring speech-language challenges that result in high recognition error rates. In this paper, we investigate how augmenting speech applications with dialogue ...
